Character background and universe (Lore)

Jonathan Joestar is the protagonist of Phantom Blood, the first part of the saga created by Hirohiko Araki. His first name and surname form the nickname ‘JoJo’, a convention that will be adopted by several members of his family over the generations. The franchise thus recounts the successive battles of the Joestar lineage against various incarnations of evil.

The story is set mainly in late 19th-century England. Jonathan is the son of George Joestar, a wealthy aristocrat who raises him according to the traditional values of honour and courtesy. The young man aspires to become a true gentleman, capable of protecting others even at the cost of his own safety.

His life is turned upside down when Dio Brando is taken in by the Joestar family. Dio becomes his adoptive brother, but soon seeks to humiliate him, isolate him and seize the family inheritance. Their shared youth marks the beginning of a rivalry that will have a lasting influence on the history of their descendants.

The conflict takes on a supernatural dimension with the discovery of the mysterious Stone Mask. This ancient artefact can transform its wearer into an immortal vampire endowed with considerable strength. Dio uses the mask and becomes a creature capable of transcending human limits, pitting Jonathan against a seemingly invincible adversary.

To fight Dio and his minions, Jonathan is trained by Will Anthonio Zeppeli in the mastery ofthe Wave, also known as Hamon. This technique is based on a specific breathing method that generates energy comparable to that of the sun, which is particularly effective against vampires and creatures spawned by the Stone Mask.

Jonathan quickly develops this ability thanks to his physical strength, discipline and willpower. However, he learns that the Wave is not based solely on power: it also requires precise control of one’s breathing, body and emotions.

He is joined in his fight by Robert E. O. Speedwagon, a former London criminal who is deeply impressed by his courage. Speedwagon becomes one of his most loyal allies and will later help to preserve the Joestar family’s legacy.

Despite Dio’s cruelty, Jonathan retains his sense of honour and compassion right to the very end. He does not seek victory out of personal ambition, but to protect his father, Erina Pendleton and all those threatened by the vampire’s powers.
