Character background and lore

Gyro Zeppeli, whose real name is Julius Caesar Zeppeli, is one of the main protagonists of Steel Ball Run. Originally from the Kingdom of Naples, he comes from a family of executioners in the service of the monarchy and has mastered a secret technique known as the Rotation. He enters the transcontinental Steel Ball Run race in order to secure a pardon for a young boy who has been unjustly sentenced to death.

Held in the United States in 1890, the Steel Ball Run takes its participants from San Diego to New York. Gyro travels this immense distance on his horse Valkyrie and meets Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who has lost the use of his legs. Intrigued by the effects of the Rotation, Johnny follows Gyro and gradually becomes his travelling companion and pupil.

Gyro uses metal spheres which he hurls after imparting an almost perfect spin to them. This energy can alter a target’s muscles, deflect projectiles, cause injuries or produce various physical phenomena. His teaching is based in particular on the observation of nature and on the principle of the Golden Rectangle, which enables him to approach an ideal Spin.

Behind his provocative demeanour, his peculiar sense of humour and his famous smile with golden teeth, Gyro possesses a deep sense of justice. His initial goal – to save a child – drives him to defy his own family tradition and risk his life in a race that conceals far greater political and supernatural stakes.

As their journey unfolds, Gyro becomes Johnny’s mentor and true friend. Their relationship forms the emotional heart of *Steel Ball Run*, with each helping the other to push beyond their limits.
