Character background and lore

Jonathan Joestar is the protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1: Phantom Blood and the first member of the Joestar family to take on the role of the main hero.

Born in England in the late 19th century, Jonathan grew up in an aristocratic family and aspired to become a true gentleman. His life was turned upside down when Dio Brando was adopted by his father, George Joestar. Behind his impeccable façade, Dio soon harbours ambitions to seize the family fortune.

The conflict between the two young men takes on a supernatural dimension when Dio uses the mysterious Stone Mask, an artefact capable of transforming its wearer into a vampire. To confront this new enemy, Jonathan learns from William A. Zeppeli to master the Hamon, an energy produced through a specific breathing technique, the properties of which are comparable to those of sunlight.

Unlike many of his descendants, Jonathan stands out for his profoundly honourable, courageous and compassionate nature. Even when faced with his enemies, he maintains a very strict sense of justice and dignity.

His clash with Dio lays the foundations for the rivalry between the Joestar and Brando lineages, a conflict that will have consequences spanning several generations.
