Character background and lore

Naoya Zen’in belongs to the powerful Zen’in clan, one of the three great families of sorcerers in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe.

He is the son of Naobito Zen’in, the 26th head of the clan. Following Naobito’s death in the wake of the Shibuya incident, a struggle for succession ensues over the leadership of the family. The official events of the Culling Game arc reveal that Naobito’s will ultimately names Megumi Fushiguro as the new clan leader, a situation Naoya finds extremely difficult to accept.

Naoya has an extremely arrogant and hierarchical personality. He attaches immense importance to talent, rank and family heritage, whilst despising those he considers inferior.

This attitude puts him in direct opposition to Maki Zen’in, who grew up within the same clan but has always been rejected because of her low occult energy.

Naoya has mastered Projection Sorcery, a technique inherited from the Zen’in clan which divides a single second into 24 frames and requires the user to plan their movements with precision. When used correctly, this technique allows for extremely high speeds and gives Naoya a fighting style based on sudden bursts of speed and great precision.

Following Mai’s death, Maki undergoes a major transformation and returns to the Zen’in estate. She successively eliminates several clan members before facing Naoya. The official timeline of the anime confirms that this duel ends with Maki’s victory and the collapse of the Zen’in clan as it had existed until then.

Naoya’s journey does not, however, end with this confrontation. His immense resentment and obsession with Maki continue to play a significant role in the subsequent events surrounding the Culling Game.

This Luminasta figurine therefore depicts a character closely linked to one of Maki’s most significant transformations and to the downfall of one of the most powerful families in the world of exorcism.
