Origin and backstory of the character (Lore)

Derpy Tiger is a supernatural creature that looks like a large blue tiger. Despite its impressive size and sharp fangs, it is best known for its clumsy behaviour, exaggerated smile and affectionate nature. It accompanies Jinu before becoming one of the most recognisable characters in the K-Pop Demon Hunters universe.

Derpy regularly travels with Sussie Bird, a strange six-eyed bird tasked with keeping an eye on his companion. The duo acts, in particular, as messengers between the world of demons and that of humans, whilst bringing a significant element of humour to the story.

Their appearance is inspired by traditional Korean depictions combining a tiger and a magpie. In these folk paintings, the tiger is often depicted as deliberately expressive or clumsy, whilst the magpie plays the role of a more alert and mocking observer. This artistic influence explains the contrast between Derpy’s supernatural appearance and his comical personality.
