Kaiji Itou is the main character in *Kaiji*, a manga created by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. A young man with no real direction in life, Kaiji finds himself caught in a spiral of debt after agreeing to act as guarantor for a former colleague.

In an attempt to repay what he owes, he takes part in a series of gambling games organised by powerful financial groups. These trials rely as much on luck as on psychology, manipulation and the ability to understand the intentions of the other participants.

Kaiji stands out for his intelligence under pressure and his ability to devise daring strategies when his back is against the wall. However, his impulsiveness, empathy and complicated relationship with risk regularly land him in extreme situations.
