Origin and character background (Lore)

Kasane Teto is a singing character born directly out of Internet fan culture. Her official website explains that she was collectively conceived in March 2008 by users of the Japanese forum 2channel, originally as an April Fool’s Day prank presenting a supposed new VOCALOID character.

On 1 April 2008, Teto was thus presented as if she were part of Crypton Future Media’s Character Vocal series. However, this was a joke: the official website expressly states that Kasane Teto is not a VOCALOID and has never used Yamaha’s VOCALOID technology.

The character did not, however, disappear after the April Fool’s Day prank. On the contrary, creators decided to give her a real voice using the UTAU voice synthesis software. An original voice bank was then developed based on the voice of Oyamano Mayo, enabling Teto to become a genuine virtual singer that musicians could use.

This community-driven origin remains at the heart of her identity. The official website describes Kasane Teto as a character created using the ideas and resources contributed by numerous internet users, and for whom fans continue to produce songs, illustrations and videos to this day.

Her design, too, has become instantly recognisable. Her official profile notably mentions her reddish-brown hair styled into two large curls, her military-inspired outfit and several deliberately quirky elements inherited from her collective creation.

Teto even has a deliberately whimsical profile: she is officially 31 years old, stands 159.5 cm tall, is described as a ‘chimera’ and is mad about French bread. These absurd characteristics were part of the humour surrounding her initial conception and have, over time, become cult elements of the character.

Her story reached a major new milestone in April 2023, on her fifteenth birthday, with the release of Synthesizer V AI Kasane Teto. This new voice bank enables the character to use the speech synthesis engine developed by Dreamtonics, whilst retaining her identity built around the Teto community.

Kasane Teto now exists across several vocal technologies, including UTAU, Synthesizer V AI and VOICEPEAK, as highlighted on her official website within her current range.

This PM Perching figurine thus celebrates a character with a particularly unusual backstory: born as a collective internet joke, Kasane Teto has, over the years, become one of the most recognisable virtual singers on the digital music scene.
