Origin and world of the character (Lore)
Released in 1973 and directed by William Friedkin, The Exorcist is a major work of world cinema, adapted from the novel by William Peter Blatty. The plot follows the terrifying demonic possession of Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old girl, by the evil entity Pazuzu. Faced with the impotence of traditional medicine, Father Damien Karras, a Jesuit priest going through a profound crisis of faith and consumed by guilt over the death of his mother, is called to the child's bedside. Supported by the experienced Father Lankester Merrin, Karras must wage an extremely violent psychological and spiritual battle against the devil, a confrontation that will require him to make the ultimate and most tragic sacrifice in order to deliver the innocent girl.
