Origin and world of the character

The Clown Doll is one of the most memorable frightening elements of the Poltergeist horror and fantasy film franchise, first introduced in 1982 and continued in 1986 with Poltergeist 2: The OtherSide. This object, originally part of young Robbie Freeling's bedroom, serves as a physical receptacle and channel for the malevolent forces led by Reverend Henry Kane. Supernaturally animated by astral entities, the doll comes to life to physically attack the child in order to divert the parents' attention and enable the abduction of his sister, Carol Anne. This incarnation became a classic reference in 1980s horror films by exploiting the fear of clowns (coulrophobia).
