Character background and universe (Lore)
In the universe of the prequel OVA Macross Zero, the VF-0 Phoenix is an exceptional variable fighter developed by the UN. Rushed into production using alien technology (OverTechnology) to counter the threat of the anti-UN’s Sv-51s, it serves as a full-scale technological testbed prior to the mass deployment of the famous VF-1 Valkyrie. Although powered by optimised conventional jet engines rather than thermonuclear reactors, it excels in its ability to switch seamlessly into Battroid mode, its humanoid combat configuration. In its Battroid form, the VF-0A/S combines the agility required for complex terrestrial environments with formidable firepower for close-quarters combat. The "A" (standard single-seater) and "S" (command version with reinforced laser cannon) variants distinguished themselves brilliantly during the conflict on Mayan Island under the command of elite pilots such as Shin Kudo and Roy Focker. The design of this model, blending military aeronautical aesthetics with cutting-edge robotic engineering, made the UN’s phoenix a legend of the Unification War. - *
