Character background and lore

Charles Xavier is a mutant with some of the most powerful telepathic abilities in the Marvel Universe. Capable of reading minds, communicating telepathically and influencing the minds of others, he chooses to use his powers to foster peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants.

He founded the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, a school based in his Westchester mansion. The institute serves both as a refuge for young mutants and as headquarters for the X-Men, a team tasked with protecting the world whilst defending the rights of their community.

In the early X-Men films, Charles Xavier leads, amongst others, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Wolverine. He regularly comes into conflict with his former friend Erik Lehnsherr, now known as Magneto. Both men share a desire to protect mutants, but advocate radically different methods: Xavier believes in dialogue and integration, whilst Magneto considers conflict with humanity to be inevitable.

The wheelchair is one of the character’s most recognisable features. Far from diminishing his authority, it emphasises the contrast between his calm demeanour and the immense power of his mind.
