Proto Man (called Blues in the original Japanese) is a major character in the Mega Man action-platform video game franchise created by Capcom. First introduced in 1990 in Mega Man 3, he is historically the first humanoid fighting android (Robot Master) designed by Doctor Thomas Light. As the initial prototype that preceded the creation of Mega Man and Roll, he fled the scientist's laboratory for fear of a modification that would alter his freedom of conscience, choosing to lead a solitary vagabond existence. Visually distinguished by his red armour, defensive shield (Proto Shield), opaque dark visor and long yellow scarf, he often intervenes in enigmatic fashion to guide or assist Mega Man, traditionally announcing himself with a distinctive melodic whistle.
