Origin and character background
Released on consoles in 2004 under the creative direction of Hideo Kojima, the stealth game masterpiece Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater plunges the player into the heart of the Cold War in 1964. At the centre of this dramatic and philosophical narrative is The Boss, an American military heroine from the Second World War, founder of the elite Cobra unit and mentor to Naked Snake (the future Big Boss), with whom she developed the martial art of CQC (Close Quarters Combat). Her apparent defection to the Soviet Union alongside Colonel Volgin forces her former pupil to infiltrate the Russian jungle to eliminate her. Behind this tragic conflict lies an absolute patriotic sacrifice dictated by the political elite to avert a global nuclear war. Her poignant story, her unwavering sense of duty and her legendary final duel in a field of white flowers make her one of the most respected, complex and iconic female figures in the entire history of video games.
