Origin and character background
Released in 2016 by Disney Animation Studios, the musical feature filmMoana is loosely based on the myths and oral traditions of the peoples of Oceania. The story follows Moana, the passionate and determined daughter of the chief of the island of Motunui. As a mysterious and dark curse threatens to wither the flora and fauna of her protective lagoon, the young girl chooses to defy her father’s ban to sail across the Pacific Ocean. Guided by the spirit of her grandmother and chosen by the ocean itself, she embarks on a perilous journey of discovery to find the shape-shifting demigod Maui, in order to cross the seas and return the heart of the creator goddess Te Fiti. This collector’s piece captures all the splendour and poetry of this legendary maritime epic.
