Origin and character lore

Monsters, Inc. is set in Monstropolis, a city populated entirely by monsters. Its energy is generated from the screams of human children, collected by teams of professional scarers who pass through magical doors to enter their bedrooms at night.

James P. Sullivan, nicknamed Sulli, is one of the best scarers at Monsters, Inc. Despite his imposing appearance, with his blue fur covered in purple spots and his horns, he has a gentle and protective nature.

His best friend, Bob Razowski, is a small green monster with just one eye. He works as Sulli’s assistant and is responsible, amongst other things, for monitoring the doors, the records and their team’s performance. Ambitious and talkative, he remains deeply loyal to his partner.

Their daily lives are turned upside down when a little human girl nicknamed Boo accidentally enters Monstropolis. The monsters then believe that children are toxic and that even the slightest contact with them can cause catastrophic contamination.

Sulli quickly realises that Bouh is not dangerous. He develops a deep protective instinct towards her and tries to take her back to her room before she is discovered by the city authorities.

Randall Boggs, one of Sulli’s main rivals, can change the colour and appearance of his skin to blend into his surroundings. He seeks to overtake Sulli in the scare rankings and is involved in a secret project designed to extract children’s screams in a far more brutal manner.

Célia Mae works as a receptionist at Monsters, Inc. and is in a relationship with Bob. Germaine, apparently just a strict-tempered administrative manager, keeps a close eye on the company’s activities.

During their adventure, Sulli and Bob discover that children’s laughter generates far more energy than their screams. This revelation gradually transforms the way Monsters, Inc. operates and calls into question the entire system on which Monstropolis was built.
