The reverse side features a mirror image of the design, still centred on the Totoros and the maize field.

Origin and character lore

My Neighbour Totoro follows Satsuki and Mei, two young sisters who move with their father into a house in the countryside. Whilst exploring the nearby woods, they discover several forest spirits, including the imposing Totoro and two smaller creatures.

Benevolent and mysterious, the Totoros embody the hidden magic of nature and the imagination unique to childhood. The acorns, leaves, crops and plant life regularly associated with the characters serve as a reminder of their deep connection to the forest and the cycles of nature, here set against a summer backdrop of a maize field.
