Character background and lore

Arlong is the captain of the Arlong Pirates and one of the first truly formidable adversaries encountered by Monkey D. Luffy during his journey through the East Blue.

A sawshark-type fish-man, he naturally possesses physical strength far superior to that of an ordinary human. His power, stamina and aquatic abilities make him a particularly dangerous fighter.

Arlong also harbours a deep hostility towards humans and regards fish-men as a superior species. This ideology serves as the justification for the domination he imposes on several villages in East Blue.

His story is closely linked to Nami’s.

When she was still just a child, Arlong’s Pirates took control of her village. Arlong quickly discovered her extraordinary talent as a cartographer and forced her to work for him, creating nautical charts to further his ambitions. In the Netflix series, Nami is thus described as an expert cartographer due to the years she spent under Arlong’s authority.

Arlong, however, promises her that she can buy her village’s freedom by raising a large sum of money. Nami then spends several years stealing from pirates in order to achieve this goal.

When this promise is finally broken, Nami finds herself utterly desperate and asks Luffy for help. He immediately decides to take on Arlong and his crew.

The Battleof Arlong Park thus becomes one of the defining moments of ONE PIECE. It marks not only Arlong’s defeat, but above all the moment when Nami truly agrees to place her trust in Luffy and becomes a full member of the Straw Hat crew.

Arlong therefore plays a vital role in Nami’s development. His cruelty, his control over her childhood and his exploitation of her talents go a long way towards explaining her relationship with money, pirates and freedom at the start of the story.

This MINIX figurine thus depicts one of the most significant antagonists from the first major stage of Luffy’s journey: the man whose defeat allows Nami to free herself once and for all from her past.
