Character background and lore

Dracule Mihawk, nicknamed ‘Hawk’s Eye’, is regarded as the world’s greatest swordsman in the ONE PIECE universe. He is therefore the ultimate goal for Roronoa Zoro, who dreams of surpassing him in order to become the world’s greatest swordsman himself.

Mihawk wields Yoru, a gigantic black blade that ranks among the most prestigious weapons in the ONE PIECE universe. His skill with the sword is such that he can defeat formidable opponents with disconcerting ease, whilst maintaining an extremely calm and composed demeanour.

In Netflix’s live-action adaptation, Mihawk is portrayed as one of the Seven Great Pirates, enjoying a special relationship with the World Government. Vice-Admiral Garp calls upon him to pursue Luffy, but his encounter with the Straw Hat crew quickly takes a different turn.

At the floating restaurant Baratie, Zoro immediately recognises Mihawk as the man he must defeat to fulfil his dream and challenges him to a duel. The gap between their skill levels is immense: Mihawk completely dominates the fight. However, impressed by Zoro’s determination and courage, he chooses to spare his life and encourages him to become stronger before coming to face him again.

This encounter becomes one of the defining moments of Zoro’s journey. From then on, Mihawk represents both his greatest obstacle and living proof of the level he must reach to fulfil his promise of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman.

In the original series, their relationship develops even further, as Mihawk eventually agrees to train Zoro for two years, despite the fact that Zoro’s very aim is to become powerful enough to defeat him.
