Origin and background of the character

Porco Rosso is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The story is set in the interwar period, above the Adriatic Sea, and follows the adventures of Marco Pagot, a former pilot transformed into an anthropomorphic pig. Now a bounty hunter, he battles air pirates whilst casting a wistful gaze upon his past, freedom and the changing world around him.

Marco, nicknamed Porco Rosso, is a character who is at once charismatic, solitary and deeply endearing. His red seaplane, his piloting style and his world-weary demeanour make him one of the most recognisable figures in the Ghibli universe.
