Batman is not just Bruce Wayne: underneath his emblem lies a tangle of influences, four decades of editorial, social and political history, and the most contradictory representations: from terrorist and fascist to resistance fighter and ultimate defender of a democratic ideal, from conservative billionaire fighting to protect his privileges to Christ-like hero sacrificing all possibility of happiness to save those who often don't deserve it. So it's time to take a closer look at the face of the bat under the mask, to shine a light on the Dark Knight, to ask ourselves: "Who is Batman?
