Character background and universe (Lore)

Ranma Saotome is the protagonist of Ranma ½, a series created by the mangaka Rumiko Takahashi. As the heir to the Saotome martial arts school, he has been training since childhood with his father Genma and has already reached a particularly high level of skill despite his young age. His daily life changes radically during a training trip to China.

Whilst training at the cursed springs of Jusenkyo, Ranma falls into the Spring of the Drowned Girl. Ever since that accident, cold water transforms his body into that of a young girl, whilst hot water allows him to regain his male form. Genma also suffers a similar curse, but in his case transforms into a panda.

On his return to Japan, Ranma also discovers that his father and Soun Tendo had long ago decided to betroth him to Akane Tendo, heiress to the Tendo dojo. The turbulent relationship between Ranma and Akane, the numerous transformations linked to the springs of Jusenkyo, and the martial arts battles form the heart of a series blending romantic comedy, action and absurd humour.

This POP! No. 2543 therefore captures the character’s concept particularly well: the different variants allow for the depiction of Ranma’s two forms, which are directly linked to the curse that defines much of his adventures.
