Billy is the puppet used by John Kramer, known as Jigsaw, to convey his instructions to the people trapped in his traps. He usually appears on a screen, in a video recording or on his famous red tricycle to explain the rules of a challenge and the consequences of failure.

Unlike many figures in horror cinema, Billy is not an autonomous creature. He is, above all, Jigsaw’s visual avatar, allowing Jigsaw to remain at a distance whilst immediately instilling a sense of fear. His white face, spiral-patterned cheeks and distorted voice have become synonymous with the franchise.

Jigsaw’s ‘games’ are designed to confront participants with their mistakes, their addictions or their disregard for life. Each victim is usually forced to make a painful choice or carry out an extreme act in order to survive. Billy introduces these trials with a catchphrase, tone and presentation that have become iconic within the series.
