Origin and character lore

The Lumas are small, star-shaped creatures from the Super Mario Galaxy universe. They travel through the cosmos alongside Rosalina, who watches over them from the Comet Observatory and acts as a motherly and protective figure.

The bond between Rosalina and the Lumas is recounted in her storybook. It tells of the encounter between a young girl and a small star-child discovered aboard an abandoned spaceship, followed by their shared journey through space.

In Super Mario Galaxy, the Lumas accompany Mario on his adventure and play a vital role in the functioning of the Comet Observatory. Some can transform into planets, galaxies or celestial objects, thereby contributing to the cycle of creation and renewal in the cosmos.

One of them, commonly known as Baby Luma, hides under Mario’s cap and grants him the power to spin. This ability allows the hero to attack his enemies, activate certain mechanisms and use launch stars to travel between different planets.
