Origin and background of the character
Jerry (Jerry Mouse) is a fictional anthropomorphic mouse created in 1940 by animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. He is the co-protagonist, alongside the cat Tom (Tom Cat), in a series of theatrical animated shorts centred on a comic rivalry and relentless physical chases (slapstick). The plot traditionally revolves around Tom’s repeated attempts to catch Jerry, and the mouse’s ability to thwart the cat’s plans through his cunning and quick wits, although the two characters occasionally show moments of camaraderie. This thematic variation isolates the mouse during one of his rare moments of tranquillity, far removed from the franchise’s usual confrontations.
