One Piece is a manga classified in the shōnen category created by Eiichirō Oda. Pre-published on Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 22, 1997, then grouped in a collection of manga chapters with the Shueisha edition since December 24, 1997.
Since then the manga has been on the road. With 103 volumes on sale in Japan in August 2022. The French version, published by Glénat from 1 September 2000, has reached 102 volumes available since September 2022. From September 26, 2021, the French version will be prepublished on the online platforms Manga Plus and Glénat Manga Max at the same time as the Japanese version.
The beginnings of the manga
One Piece takes place in a fictional world. The story takes place during a period when men seek freedom through the ocean. Some pirates long for an era known as the Golden Age of Piracy where their destiny would be guided by freedom and adventure. This era began after the death by execution of a certain well-known pirate: One Piece Gol D, also known as Gold Roger 4. The last words of this ruthless pirate before his execution were an announcement to other pirates in search of wealth, he declares to the world that he is free to seek his hidden treasure. This treasure is named after its owner: the One Piece

22 years after Roger's execution, interest in his treasure is waning. Indeed, many have given up on it after years of searching in vain and some even question the very existence of the treasure.
Although pirates still pose a threat to citizens, the navy has become more effective in responding to their attacks on the four seas. However, this change has not stopped a young boy named Luffy from dreaming of becoming the successor to Roger, the legendary pirate.
So he embarked on an adventurous journey, with the primary goal of building a crew to reach the sea where the famous One Piece is hidden, the Grand Line Sea. There, the pirate craze continues to rage, and many of the biggest names in piracy are still in pursuit of One Piece.
Luffy's childhood
Luffy was born in Fuchsia Village. When he was seven years old, he met and befriended a pirate crew that had settled in his village. This crew was captained by a man named Shanks. Shanks is very kind to Luffy, who soon develops an admiration for him. Shanks became his idol, so Luffy decided to become a pirate himself and, to prove his courage and determination to join the crew, he stuck a knife under his eye. However, this proof of courage was not enough for Shanks to accept. Indeed, despite his determination, Shanks refused to let Luffy join his crew because, according to him, the boy was too young.
Luffy, a child like no other
Luffy accidentally eats a fruit known as the 'Demon Fruit', mistaking it for an ordinary fruit. This fruit is also called 'Gomu Gomu no Mi' and it turns Luffy into an elastic man. The young boy then possesses a strange power allowing him to stretch strongly, he seems to be made of rubber. But this power upsets our hero, because he knows that he will never swim again, which is a huge weakness for someone who wants to spend his life at sea. However, his dream will remain unchanged and Luffy will continue to pursue his quest to become a pirate and perhaps one day become the king of the pirates, holder of the One Piece.
