Originally published in 1818 by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein has become one of the seminal works of fantasy and science fiction literature. However, it was Universal Pictures ’ 1931 film adaptation in particular that shaped the image of the monster as it is still widely recognised today.

The film Frankenstein is one of the works that helped establish Universal as a major force in horror cinema during the 1930s, alongside films such as Dracula and, later, The Invisible Man.
