Character background and lore

Toph Beifong is an earthbender from a wealthy and influential family in the Earth Kingdom. Blind from birth, she has developed a unique way of perceiving her surroundings by sensing the vibrations that travel through the ground.

For a long time, her parents regarded her as a fragile child who needed to be protected from the outside world. In secret, however, Toph took part in earthbending tournaments under the nickname ‘Blind Bandit’, where she defeated opponents far larger and more experienced than herself.

When Aang is looking for a teacher capable of teaching him earthbending, Toph leaves her family to join his group. Her direct and unyielding approach forces the Avatar to face problems head-on rather than avoid them. Despite her sarcastic and independent nature, she quickly becomes a particularly loyal ally.

Toph is also credited with the discovery of metalbending. Trapped in a metal cage, she realises that metal still contains tiny particles of earth and learns to manipulate them. This discovery is one of the greatest innovations in the history of elementbending.

After the Hundred-Year War, she helps rebuild the world and passes on her new discipline to other benders. Her influence gradually leads to the creation of specialised units capable of using metal to maintain order and protect major cities.

In *Avatar: The Last Airbender*, Toph is reunited with Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko several years after the fall of Fire Lord Ozai. The group must prevent new forces from taking advantage of the still-fragile peace and protect an ancient power capable of upsetting the world’s balance.
