Origin and character lore
The worldof Avatar: The Last Airbender is divided into four major civilisations associated with the elements: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads. Some people are able to manipulate the element associated with their people, but only the Avatar can learn to master all four elements and preserve the balance of the world.
The Air Nomads traditionally live in temples built high in the mountains and follow a philosophy based on freedom, spirituality and respect for all forms of life. Aang was born among them and proved to be a prodigy at airbending even before he learnt that he was the new Avatar.
The Water Tribes are mainly settled at the North and South Poles. Their masters can control water in various forms and use their powers both in battle and to heal injuries. Katara, originally from the Southern Water Tribe, gradually becomes an accomplished master and one of Aang’s closest allies.
The Earth Kingdom is the largest of the four nations. Its inhabitants are known for their endurance and determination, whilst earthbenders use solid, grounded movements to move rocks, erect defences or alter their environment.
The Fire Nation has an industrialised society and a powerful army. Under the reign of Fire Lord Sozin and subsequently his descendants, it launched a war aimed at extending its authority over the rest of the world. This invasion led, in particular, to the near-total disappearance of the Air Nomads.
After being trapped in an iceberg for a hundred years, Aang is freed by Katara. He then discovers that the Fire Nation is on the verge of winning the war and realises that he must finally accept his role as the Avatar. Accompanied by Katara, Sokka and new allies, he travels across the four nations to master the elements he has yet to learn and restore peace.
This Bitty Box captures this essential aspect of the series by bringing together the four major cultures in a single miniature setting. Aang and Katara can thus travel from one kingdom to another, whilst the other Bitty Pop! figures in the collection allow the scene to be gradually expanded.
