Origin and lore of the creature

The owl-bear is a fantastical creature from the Dungeons & Dragons universe, whose rules and part of the bestiary are featured in Baldur’s Gate 3. It combines the power and general build of a bear with the head, beak and certain features of a large bird of prey. Its strength, claws and territorial nature make it a particularly dangerous opponent for ill-prepared adventurers.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, players may encounter a female owl-bear protecting her cub in a cave near the Druids’ Grove. Depending on the decisions made during the adventure, the cub may subsequently join the party’s camp and become a much-loved companion.

Initially wary and guided by its instincts, the young owl-bear can gradually grow accustomed to the adventurers’ presence. Interactions at camp help to gain its trust, particularly by feeding it and looking after it. It also develops an amusing relationship with Gratte, the dog who may join the party.

The armoured version refers to the possibility of seeing the now-adult cub take part in the final battle, equipped with armour to support the player’s allies. This appearance transforms the little creature encountered at the start of the journey into a powerful combat companion, whilst serving as a reminder of the bond forged with it throughout the adventure.
