The Guppy character comes from the iconic independent video game The Binding of Isaac, designed by Edmund McMillen and originally released in 2011 before undergoing a major overhaul under the title The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth in 2014. This flagship title of the roguelike genre is loosely based on the biblical story of Isaac's sacrifice, transposing the plot to a nightmarish basement where a young boy is on the run from his fanatical mother. Within the game, Guppy is a direct reference to the creator's deceased real cat.
