This iconic father-son and martial bond stems from Akira Toriyama’s legendary work, Dragon Ball Z. Following Son Goku’s tragic sacrifice to defeat Raditz at the very start of the Saiyan saga, Piccolo, the former Demon King, decided to take the very young Son Gohan—then aged just four—under his wing. Aware of the immense energy potential hidden within this young half-human, half-demon boy, the Namekian warrior subjects him to an extremely gruelling and solitary survival training regime in the desert for a year, in order to prepare him for the imminent invasion by Vegeta and Nappa. As the months passed, Piccolo’s hatred and bitterness faded, giving way to a deep paternal affection and unwavering mutual respect – a sacred bond that would guide Gohan to become one of Earth’s most powerful defenders.
