Character background and universe (Lore)

The Evangelion Test Type-01, also known as EVA-01, is the iconic unit from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Piloted primarily by Shinji Ikari, it was developed by the NERV organisation to combat the mysterious creatures known as Angels.

Despite its appearance as a giant robot, an Evangelion is not merely a machine. The EVAs are biomechanical beings encased in imposing containment armour and mentally linked to their pilots via a synchronisation system.

EVA-01 is particularly notable for its purple and green colour scheme, as well as for several episodes in which it displays a level of autonomy and power far exceeding its creators’ expectations. These moments, often associated with its ‘Berserk’ state, rank among the series’ most memorable scenes.

Thanks to its instantly recognisable design and its central role in Shinji’s story, the Evangelion Unit-01 has become one of the definitive icons of the mecha genre and one of the most famous symbols of the Evangelion franchise.
