Origin and character lore

Godzilla, known as Gojira in Japan, is one of the most famous giant monsters in the history of cinema. First appearing in the Japanese film *Godzilla*, produced by Toho in 1954, he is generally depicted as a colossal creature capable of causing massive destruction and battling other kaiju.

Recognisable by his reptilian silhouette, his imposing dorsal plates and his famous atomic breath, Godzilla has taken on very different roles throughout his many incarnations. Depending on the film, he may appear as a threat to humanity, a force of nature or even a protector battling even more dangerous monsters.
