Character background and lore
Edward Cullen is one of the main characters in the Twilight saga. Born human at the start of the 20th century, he was turned into a vampire by Carlisle Cullen and subsequently joined the Cullen family, a group of vampires who choose not to feed on human blood.
Edward is particularly notable for his speed, his supernatural strength and his ability to read the minds of those around him. However, his encounter with Bella Swan turns his life upside down: unlike other humans, Bella’s thoughts remain inexplicably inaccessible to him.
The relationship between Edward and Bella lies at the heart of the saga. It pits Edward against a constant conflict between his vampiric instincts and his desire to protect Bella, whilst forcing him to question his own view of immortality.
One of the most iconic visual features of the vampires in *Twilight* is their reaction to sunlight: their skin does not burn, but sparkles as if covered in thousands of shimmering facets.
