He became James Potter's best friend and a member of the Marauders, and was appointed Harry's godfather. The victim of a terrible plot orchestrated by the traitor Peter Pettigrow when Lord Voldemort fell, he was falsely accused of murdering his friends and sent without trial to the fortress of Azkaban. After twelve years in solitary confinement, his ability to metamorphose into a large black dog (Animagus) enabled him to evade the vigilance of the Destroyers and escape. Driven by a desire to protect his godson and set the record straight, he joined the resistance, making his family home at 12 Square Grimmaurd available to the Order of the Phoenix.
