Yamada Asaemon Sagiri is one of the central protagonists of the manga and anime Hell's Paradise(Jigokuraku), created by mangaka Yuji Kaku. The story takes place towards the end of the Edo period in Japan. The story follows Gabimaru, a ninja assassin condemned to death, who is offered a full pardon by the shogunate if he manages to bring back the Elixir of Life from a mysterious and hostile island called Shinsenkyo. Sagiri is a high-ranking female samurai belonging to the prestigious Yamada clan, which specialises in executions and blade testing. She is officially assigned to Gabimaru as executioner and overseer to escort him on this perilous expedition, where she distinguishes herself by her technical mastery of the sword and her personal quest for spiritual balance in the face of her duty to deliver death.
