Character background and lore

Ryomen Sukuna is one of the most fearsome figures in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is known as the King of Plagues, a reputation earned through a power that already struck terror into the hearts of exorcists over a millennium ago.

The anime’s official profile states that Sukuna lived over a thousand years ago, during the golden age of exorcism. The exorcists of that era joined forces to try to defeat him, but were vanquished.

Even after his death, Sukuna continues to pose a threat. His body breaks down into a series ofcursed objects, particularly his fingers, whose power is such that they attract and strengthen the other Curses.

Centuries later, Yuji Itadori swallows one of these fingers and becomes Sukuna’s vessel. The King of the Curses is thus incarnated within his body, although Yuji generally retains control of himself.

Sukuna has a deeply arrogant and cruel personality. He considers himself superior to virtually everyone around him and shows little interest in rules, morality or human life.

His confidence is not, however, without foundation. He possesses an exceptional mastery of occult energy and an extremely dangerous arsenal, which includes, in particular, powerful slashing attacks.

His Territory Expansion, Malevolent Shrine, particularly illustrates his fighting style: rather than being confined to a conventional enclosed area, it spreads across a vast expanse and transforms the space around him into a veritable slaughterhouse.

Sukuna also possesses an extremely well-developed sense of combat. He quickly observes his opponents’ techniques, understands how they work and knows how to exploit their weaknesses with formidable precision.

Duringthe Shibuya incident, his intervention once again demonstrated the immense gulf that separates him from most other combatants. His passage across the battlefield leaves a trail of massive destruction in its wake and reinforces his status as an absolute threat.
