Character background and lore

Dory is a blue surgeonfish living in the Pacific Ocean. She suffers from severe short-term memory loss, which means she regularly forgets people she has just met, instructions she has been given or the reason for her journey.

In Finding Nemo, she meets Marlin, a clownfish who is crossing the ocean to find his son, who has been captured by a diver. Dory spontaneously decides to help him after reading the address written on a diving mask: ‘P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney’.

Despite her frequent forgetfulness, Dory proves to be particularly brave and resourceful. She can read, communicates in her own way with the whales and maintains a positive attitude even when Marin loses all hope. Her optimism quickly becomes essential to continuing the journey.

The phrase ‘Just keep swimming’ emerges as a simple principle for carrying on when a situation seems hopeless. Dory sings it to give herself courage and to remind Marin that he can only find Nemo by continuing on his way.
