Character background and universe (Lore)

Maomao is the main protagonist of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, a series of light novels written by Natsu Hyuga. Raised in the red-light district by an apothecary, she developed a deep knowledge of medicines, plants, poisons and their effects on the human body from a very young age.

After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, Maomao initially tries to keep a low profile. However, her curiosity and medical skills quickly attract attention when she begins to solve several mysterious incidents involving the concubines and the court’s inhabitants.

She stands out for her intelligence, her keen powers of observation and her almost obsessive interest in poisons. Her pragmatic and sometimes sarcastic nature contrasts with the political intrigues and the palace’s very strict conventions.
