Maomao is a young apothecary with an exceptional knowledge of medicinal plants, remedies and, above all, poisons. After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, she initially tries to keep a low profile, but her medical skills and talent for solving puzzles quickly attract attention.
Jinshi, for his part, holds a privileged position at court. Elegant, charismatic and shrouded in mystery, he quickly recognises the value of Maomao’s abilities and regularly calls upon her to resolve delicate matters involving illness, poisoning and political intrigue.
The relationship between the two characters is one of the main driving forces behind *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*. Maomao’s pragmatic and sometimes aloof demeanour contrasts with Jinshi’s growing interest in her, giving rise to a dynamic that blends investigations, humour, court politics and romantic tension.
