Maomao is the heroine of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, a work set in a world inspired by Imperial China. As the daughter of an apothecary, she has possessed a thorough knowledge of medicinal plants, poisons and remedies from a very young age.
After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant at the imperial palace, Maomao initially tries to keep a low profile. However, her curiosity and talent for solving medical problems eventually attract the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking court official.
Thanks to her keen powers of observation and highly rational approach, she regularly finds herself involved in investigations involving mysterious illnesses, poisonings, court rivalries and political secrets.
