Character background and lore

Tam is a young gorgon studying at Strixhaven University on the plane of Arcavios. She is particularly drawn to mathematics, magical structures and phenomena that can be understood through sequences, patterns and constants. In the ‘Secrets of Strixhaven’ stories, she is notably described as being able to analyse events using a logic similar to that taught at Quandrix College.

Contrary to the traditional image of the menacing gorgon, Tam comes across as a thoughtful, reserved student who is deeply devoted to her fellow students. She prefers to observe and understand a situation before acting, even when events around her become difficult to control.

Her story is linked to a group of students facing increasingly dangerous magical anomalies within Strixhaven. Tam tries to help her friends whilst battling a sense of isolation and influences whose origins she does not immediately understand. Official accounts particularly emphasise her need to protect others and her attachment to the memories she shares with her group.

In the card game, Tam, the Observant Sequencer, is a legendary gorgon and witch creature. Her ability uses the ‘prepared’ mechanic: when a land comes under her player’s control, Tam can prepare a spell, which can then be cast as a copy before the creature needs to be prepared again. This mechanic was developed to represent mages capable of anticipating events and keeping a spell ready for use at the right moment.

The magic circle held by the miniature directly reflects this speciality. Its precise shape, concentric symbols and Tam’s focused posture give the impression that she is assembling a complex sequence before unleashing the prepared spell.
