Origin and character background (Lore)

Totoro is the guardian spirit of the forest at the heart of Hayao Miyazaki’s film My Neighbour Totoro. He is discovered by the young sisters Satsuki and Mei after they move with their father to a house in the countryside.

With his huge, round figure, broad smile and peaceful nature, Totoro embodies the film’s sense of wonder. He lives inside a gigantic tree and appears only to certain people, particularly children who are able to perceive the supernatural world around them.
