Character background and lore

Orochimaru is one of Konoha’s three legendary ninjas, alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. A former pupil of the Third Hokage, he distinguished himself from an early age through his intelligence, his mastery of a wide range of techniques and his obsessive interest in the secrets of ninjutsu.

Driven by a desire to acquire all knowledge and achieve immortality, Orochimaru conducts forbidden experiments and develops a technique enabling him to transfer his spirit into new bodies. His close connection with snakes is evident in his summons, transformations and numerous attacks. A major antagonist for much of the series, he remains a complex, unpredictable character who plays a central role in the development of several protagonists, notably Sasuke Uchiha.
