Character background and lore

Koby is one of the very first characters Monkey D. Luffy meets at the start of ONE PIECE. When they first meet, the young boy is living underAlvida’s rule and completely lacks self-confidence.

Despite his fear, Koby has long harboured a very specific dream: to join the Marines and become an officer capable of defending the innocent.

His encounter with Luffy plays a decisive role in his development. The almost boundless confidence of the future Straw Hat captain encourages Koby to openly acknowledge his ambition and find the courage to forge his own path.

Their goals, however, are completely at odds: Luffy wants to become the Pirate King, whilst Koby wishes to devote his life to the Marines. Despite this, the two characters develop a mutual respect that gradually transcends the simple opposition between pirates and law enforcement.

In the Netflix adaptation, Koby joins the Marines and ends up under the supervision of Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp. Garp recognises his potential and helps train him, alongside Helmeppo.

Koby stands out above all for his desire to uphold a fair and humane vision of the Navy. More than rank or power, he wishes to become someone capable of protecting others whilst remaining true to his convictions.

This motivation forms the central thread of his development. The shy and submissive young boy we meet at the start of the story gradually gains courage, discipline and self-assurance.

In the original work, his journey takes on even greater significance as he becomes an increasingly skilled fighter and a key figure in the new generation of Marines.
