Character background and lore

Monkey D. Garp is a legendary Vice-Admiral of the Navy and one of the most important characters in the history of ONE PIECE.

In the Netflix live-action adaptation, Garp is portrayed as a seasoned and formidable officer, deeply committed to his own vision of justice. He also shares a particularly significant bond with the story’s hero, as he is Monkey D. Luffy’s grandfather.

Garp would have preferred to see his grandson follow in his footsteps and join the Navy. Luffy, however, chooses a radically different path: to become a pirate and set sail with the ambition of finding the One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates.

This conflict places Garp in a particularly complex situation. As a Vice-Admiral, he represents the authority responsible for pursuing pirates, whilst on a personal level, he remains deeply concerned about his grandson’s fate.

In the Netflix series, he also plays an important role in the training of Koby and Helmeppo. He gradually becomes their mentor and seeks to instil in them a sense of justice based more on their own convictions than on mere obedience to orders.

Garp also enjoys an exceptional reputation within the Navy. His past is notably linked to Gol D. Roger, the former Pirate King, whose capture helped make Garp a true legend.
