Character background and lore

Roronoa Zoro is a pirate hunter and a particularly talented swordsman who dreams of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman. His ambition stems from a promise he made to his childhood friend Kuina, with whom he used to train at the dojo in the village of Shimotsuki.

After Kuina’s death, Zoro inherits her sword, the Wado Ichimonji, and pursues their shared dream. This rare blade became one of his most prized weapons and accompanied him as he mastered Santoryu, a fighting style in which he wields three swords simultaneously: one in each hand and a third between his teeth.

Zoro meets Monkey D. Luffy whilst he is being held captive by Marine soldiers. After fighting alongside him, he becomes the first member to officially join the Straw Hat crew. Behind his stern demeanour and his particularly poor sense of direction lies a deeply loyal fighter, ready to risk his life for his captain and his comrades.

In Netflix’s live-action adaptation, Zoro is played by Mackenyu. He retains his mastery of the three swords, his reserved nature and his goal of surpassing the world’s greatest swordsmen, whilst joining Luffy on his journey in search of the legendary One Piece.
