In the dark and deconstructed narrative of the Madoka Magica universe, Kyubey (whose real name is Incubator) is an extraterrestrial entity devoid of any human emotion or sense of morality. Belonging to a race of highly advanced logic, his mission is to combat the entropy that threatens to destroy the cosmos by harvesting the immense spiritual energy generated by the emotional fluctuations of human teenage girls. To this end, he approaches young girls to seal a magical pact: he grants any of their wishes, even the most impossible ones, in exchange for which they receive a Soul Gem and are obliged to fight nightmarish monsters known as Witches. Behind his appearance as an adorable little mascot lies a cold and utilitarian schemer. He conceals from the candidates the terrible biological truth of the contract: namely, that their souls are permanently extracted from their bodies and that their inescapable fate is to sink into despair themselves, thereby transforming into Witches in turn, thus fuelling a merciless cosmic cycle of sacrifice.
