Origin and background of the character
Ranma Saotome is the central protagonist of the cult classic Ranma 1/2, the legendary comedy and martial arts manga created by the famous mangaka Rumiko Takahashi in the late 1980s. A young prodigy at the Saotome School of Free Fighting, he falls victim to a terrible and unique curse that befalls him whilst training in China at the cursed springs of Jusenkyo. From that day on, mere contact with cold water instantly transforms Ranma into a lovely young red-haired girl, whilst hot water allows him to regain his original male appearance. Forced into an engagement with the young Akane Tendo to ensure the succession of the family dojo, Ranma must juggle eccentric martial arts rivals, intrusive romantic suitors and the constant misunderstandings caused by his dual biological nature. Here, Banpresto has applied all its expertise to faithfully recreate the classic lines of his Chinese-inspired martial arts outfit, his famous black plait and the determined expression on his face.
