Ranma Saotome is a young martial arts prodigy who was cursed whilst training in China with his father, Genma, at the springs of Jusenkyo. Upon falling into the ‘Spring of the Drowned Girl’, his body underwent a permanent magical transformation: contact with cold water instantly turns him into a young red-haired girl, whilst hot water allows him to regain his original male appearance. Although smaller in this female form, he retains all his physical strength, his prodigious agility and his formidable mastery of the Saotome school of free-style combat. Often used tactically by Ranma to deceive his opponents, win favours or escape from tricky situations, this involuntary transformation lies at the heart of the romantic misunderstandings, love rivalries and farcical confrontations that punctuate daily life at the Tendo dojo.
